While the other play-off contending teams also have a hard remaining set of fixtures, Charlton have one of the hardest, making these closing stages of the league the most important and most tense. Charlton come into the game in 8th position with 58 points, two points off 6th placed Plymouth and 5th placed Scunthorpe. With one game in hand on Plymouth, but two on Scunthorpe. Wigan and Charlton are two teams expected to be battling for promotion come the end of the season. Wigan have had quite an inconsistent start to the season, starting with 4 wins in their first four games in all competitions, but have dropped off recently with only 1 win and a draw in their last 4 games. Charlton however, have had a brilliant start to the season, winning 5 of their 6 league games and the all but 1 of their 3 cup games. Charlton came into the match against Southend losing just 1 of their opening 5 league games, leaving them yet to be beaten at home, sitting at 3rd place in the league table and one of the best form teams in the league. Considering Southend finished just outside the playoffs last season, narrowly missing out to Millwall, they have had a rather disappointing start with only 1 win, 3 draws and a loss, with their only win coming against Blackburn on the first day of the season and being winless since, leaving them occupying 15th place. Incomings Billy Clarke - The first of Karl Robinson's summer signings and, from what he has shown in our pre-season friendlies so far, a decent one at that. The Bradford striker/centre forward helped Bradford reach the Play-offs last season. Going by Bradford fan's views and opinions on Clarke, he was very much loved by the bantams faithful mainly for his dedication and love for the club but also for his work ethic, however they weren't to fond with what matters most, his footballing ability. Personally, I think it's a good signing as we struggled in that creative midfielder/forward role last season. A problem which arose for Russell Slade last summer and one which has never been fully addressed. We have players who can play there, but not naturally and are better suited to other positions. Recently promoted Argyle will most likely look to avoid relegation, as most newly promoted sides do. And with the signings they have made, should be more than capable of achieving their goal. Meanwhile, after already having spent a season in League One after relegation the season before last, Charlton will be desperate and eager to gain promotion, however, it will be an extraordinarily difficult task given the recent ownership troubles. Though with the good signings made, top 6 should definitely be the bare minimum for a strong Charlton team. Arguably the strongest Charlton side in recent years. Following what was a very disappointing season, there seems to be a lot more positivity around The Valley. We've made some good additions to the squad, with Mark Marshall and Ben Reeves being the main stand outs, while also keeping hold of key players in Jason Pearce, Ricky Holmes and Josh Magennis. Despite these new signings, the squad still looks a little light with the losses of Cristian Ceballos, Jorge Teixeira and Igor Vetokele to Duchâtelet's other club, Sint Truiden, as well as Nicky Ajose being loaned to Bury and Tony Watt being sold to Belgian second division side, OH-Leuven. However, the sale of these players will free up wages for Robinson to make new signings. A couple of areas that I feel still need improving are a back-up central midfielder, a striker and a winger. Since the beginning of the year, agitated Charlton fans have been protesting and demonstrating against owner, Roland Duchâtelet and CEO, Katrien Meire. Frustration amongst the Charlton fans has been built upon numerous mistakes and a clear lack of footballing knowledge expressed by the duo with no intention of listening to the people who matter most.
